The communal bank "PRINCESAS DEL AMOR" is starting its fourth cycle in Pro Mujer, part of the Los Andes social center. It is comprised of eight members and has a board of directors that is chaired by Mrs. Blanca. The members of the group have different businesses among which are food sales, jacket sales, general store, seamstress shop, jacket making and bread sales.

Mrs. Blanca has been in the Pro Mujer program for four cycles and joined through an invitation from a representative. Currently she runs a neighborhood general store where she has been for several years.

The loan she has requested is to increase her working capital to buy a telephone for the store. She will buy it at Ceja and install it in the store. Her work generates an income that allows her to help the family. She has a common-law husband and three children.

When asked what she enjoys most about Pro Mujer she says that it is the health and credit training.

María is not in the picture for cultural reasons.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
