Chematia is a mother of four adult children and lives with her family in Eldoret, where she has been active in farming for over 10 years through intensive production of maize for the local market.
Chematia has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to help her venture into poultry farming. She says she will be able to have an all-season production of poultry, unlike maize farming, which takes place only twice a year and is highly influenced by weather conditions. She adds that the increased income will improve her standard of living.
Chematia notes, additionally, that their small parcels of land are a limitation on the production of crops like maize.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
