Jim is a farmer in Eldoret town in North Rift Kenya. He is 33 years old and works in a tea factory within the locality. In addition, he has been practicing poultry farming for the last 6 years and selling his poultry produce to the local market. He is married and has two children, aged 9 and 4.
Jim has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to boost his poultry business by buying a generator and a solar panel for lighting his poultry farm. He says these will help in feeding the birds at night and bring warmth during the cold seasons. He says the income from his poultry project be channeled toward the education of his children.
Jim says the farmer's main challenge is the high costs incurred in treating the birds.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
