Andrew is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. He is married with 2 children, aged 17 and 4 years. He has been in active farming for 3 years and produces milk and eggs for the local market. He is age 28.
Andrew has requested Juhudi Kilimo, a Kiva partner, to advance him a loan of 31,200 KES to help him purchase and insure a dairy cow. He says his focus is to own four dairy cows and to buy a motorcycle to help him in making cheap deliveries to the markets. He hopes improved farming will enable him to educate his children and give them better living standards.
He also points at the challenge poised by animal diseases as the major drawback. He is, however, keen on fully repaying the loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
