Beatrice is a mother of four children, aged fourteen, thirteen, ten and seven. She is herself aged thirty-four and has been in farming for ten years. Her produce of beans, maize, potatoes, cabbages and milk are sold locally. She also does tailoring for additional income.
Beatrice has made a second loan request with Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a dairy cow. She says she wants to embark on intensive dairy farming and build a bigger and better dairy unit for her animals with a focus of adding three more dairy cows in her farm in within five years. She says the income will also go into educating her children.
Beatrice also mentions insufficient water supply as her big challenge coupled with high input costs.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
