Joe is aged 40 and has been in farming in his home area of Kitale for four years. He is married and has 3 children, between 9 and 2 years. The first two are in school. His farm produce of milk and eggs are sold locally.
Joe has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase more poultry birds for the business. He says this will boost his poultry business and draw him closer to his target of 1000 birds on the farm. He adds that he has the potential of being the main egg supplier in the area and wants to focus on achieving that height in five years time. He says the income generated will improve his family living standards as well as help in repaying the loan. He mentions rampant poultry diseases as a major challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
