David is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya, where he lives with his wife and seven children. He has been in farming for 4 years and currently produces milk and vegetables for the local market. He is aged 51, and his children range between 20 and 13 years of age.
David has requested a loan of 62,400 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He says this will boost his milk output, providing supplementary meals to his family, as well as giving additional income for other basic needs. He aspires to be a major supplier of milk in the future.
David mentions diseases and drought as the main challenges to farming in the area.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
