Varlam is a 32-year-old farmer from the village of Akhasheni, East Georgia. He is married and lives with his large family: wife - Mariam, two sons (9 and 5 years old), parents and grandparents. The primary source of the income for the family is agriculture. They have a 0.8-hectare vineyard. Also, the family grows tomatoes, melons and peaches on a family-owned 1.6 hectares of land. All harvested products are sold locally to retailers. In addition, the family has three calves. All adult family members are involved in farming; they work hard during the day on their farm. Total average monthly income of the family is 1,500 Laris, including the monthly pensions of Varlam’s grandparents.
Varlam requested credit for purchasing fertilizers and hiring a tractor for tilling the land. After properly completing seasonal work, the family will get a good harvest. Varlam hopes that next fall, after selling the harvested products and grown calves, he will get enough funds to purchase a tractor. In the future, he will use the tractor for tilling of his land, as well as neighborhood plots. First, he will significantly save on the costs on tilling of his own land and second, he will get additional income from serving neighbor farmers.
