Tofiq A. is a 49-year-old farmer who sells milk and yogurt to the local bazaar traders. He also breeds calves. He has ten years of experience in this field. He lives with his family in a small village in the Saatli region. He applied for a loan of $1200 to purchase one milker cow for $600 and two baby calves for $300 each.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
