Marhamat is a 48 year-old woman and a mother of two children, whom she raised on her own and married off her daughter. Marhamat's son works as a security guard at a market, and his monthly income is only 300 somoni, which is not enough to cover living expenses for himself and his mother. This is why Marhamat works as a janitor at a sales office, and her income is 250 somoni. But it is clear from this family's monthly income that the family is unable to start repairs of their apartment, and this is why Marhamat wants to use this loan to make repairs to her kitchen and use her income to gradually repay the loan on a monthly basis. She is grateful to the organization for this opportunity to solve her family problems.

About MDO Arvand
MDO Arvand is one of the leading microfinance institutions in Tajikistan, offering small loans to entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. This makes an enormous difference in a country, which is not only the poorest in Central Asia, but also home to a population where two-thirds live below the poverty line. Today, Tajikistan's economy literally depends on remittances being sent from family members working abroad in Russia because there are so few local job opportunities.
Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
