James is 34 years old and married with 4 children aged between 10 and 4 years. He has been in active farming for 3 years, with his produce of maize, eggs and beans being sold to the local market. He lives with his family in Kitale, Western Kenya.
James has requested a loan of 31,200 KES from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He says the dairy cow will improve his farming income, and he intends to buy a motorcycle with the farming income for a venture into a transport business. He adds there will be more milk, too, for family consumption
James says animal diseases are a challenge to farmers in the area.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
