Musa is 35 years old and has been in farming for 8 years. He is married with 4 children aged between 10 and 1 years. He currently employs one farmhand and produces milk, eggs and maize for the local market. He works as a veterinary officer in Kitale.
Musa has requested a loan of 102,400 KES from Juhudi Kilimo. He says he will use 62,400 KES to buy and insure a dairy cow and use the remaining 40,000 KES to construct a modern dairy unit (barn) for his animals. He hopes the developments will boost his production to the level that he generates more income for better family upkeep and education for the children.
He notes animal diseases as the main challenge in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
