Karina
Karina is a young woman who is 22 years of age. She lives with her family in the community of Osa, which is located in Caña Blancal in Puntarenas Province. This community is known for being in a rural area with beaches that are frequented by many visitors. The main business activities are tourism and agriculture.


Karina has the support and assistance of her entire family, which makes it easier for her to continue her business. In addition, she says that her business is very interesting because she has seen her venture gradually grow. Demand gets stronger each time and her neighbors in the community are satisfied with the service she provides.


At the moment, Karina is requesting a microloan in the amount of 596,000 CRC in order to buy chickens. This will enable her to maintain her business in the best way possible. In addition, she will have more income to support her family.


Doña Karina is a member of the Communal Credit Enterprise of Caña Blancal, one of the 150 organizations that are part of EDESA in Costa Rica. She hopes this loan will help her grow on both a personal and financial level. Karina also expresses her appreciation that these types of organizations and credit facilitators dedicate most of their time to productive activities.

Karina es una joven de 22 años de edad el cual vive con su familia, en una comunidad llamada Osa, localizada en Caña Blancal esto en la provincia de Puntarenas. Está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona rural muy visitada por sus playas. Sus principales actividades económicas son las turísticas y agropecuarias.

Tiene el apoyo y la ayuda de todos sus familiares, lo cual le facilita seguir con el proyecto. Además dice que el proyecto le es muy interesante ya que ha visto como poco a poco su negocio crece y la demanda cada vez es más fuerte y que los vecinos de la comunidad se han sentido satisfechos con el servicio brindado.

Lo que en estos momentos solicita Karina es un micro crédito de ¢596,000(quinientos noventa y seis mil colones), para comprar pollos de granja, para dar el mejor mantenimiento y asistencia posible a su proyecto. Y también de esta manera tener más ingresos económicos para sostener su núcleo familiar.

Doña Karina es socio de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de Caña Blancal, una de las 150 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Con este préstamo se espera crecer más a nivel personal y económico. También destaca que gracias a este tipo de organizaciones y medios facilitadores de crédito puede dedicar más tiempo a las actividades productivas.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
