Wilson is a farmer in Murang'a, Central Kenya. He is aged 23 and has been in farming for one year, with his horticultural produce being sold locally.
Wilson has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a motorcycle for a venture into a transport business. He says he wants to do transport due to the boom experienced in the sector due to poor roads in the area and a lack of means among farmers to supply their produce to the market. He adds that it will also help secure him income during seasons of poor farm produce.
Wilson reiterates that fluctuation in market prices for farm produce during harvest is discouraging since they are forced to dispose of the produce as a result of a lack of a storage system.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
