Julius, 34, is a resident and a farmer in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya, where he carries out farming as well as a transport business. He is married with two children, ages 9 and 7. He has been in active farming for 10 years and currently sells beans, maize and wheat produced locally.
Julius has requested for a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy dairy goats. He says these goats will be able to provide him with milk during dry seasons. He says the loan will help him improve his farming by buying dairy cows in the future and provide income to educate his children.
He sees rampant drought as the main challenge to farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
