Rotich is a farmer in the Litein area of the South Rift Valley, Kenya. He has been farming here for 9 years. He is aged 27 and married with one child aged 3. His farm produces tea, milk and vegetables for the local market.
Rotich has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a motorcycle for his transport business. He says the motorcycle will help him to make deliveries to the market in addition to earning money from providing services to other farmers. He sees his costs going down and his income going up, and being able to give his family a better standard of living.
He mentions poor markets and weather as the greatest challenges to farmers in the area.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
