Arzu is a 44 year old woman who has been selling and breeding sheep for the last 20 years. She is an IDP (internally displaced person). Arzu buys lambs, raises them, and fattens and resells them for a profitable price within 6-7 months. Arzu usually sells sheep in the central bazaar. She is married and has three children. Her husband actively helps her to run this business. Her monthly income is 200 AZN, but this is not enough to cover the needs of her beloved children. Arzu applied for 1000 AZN loan to purchase 10 sheep and fodder.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
