Ana Leticia
Leticia, 44, is married and has two children; she lives with her husband and one of her children. She has been running her store for five years; it’s home-based. Leticia sells clothes that she makes herself in her store and also cosmetics, costume jewelry and other items for the home.

Every day from 7 in the morning until 11 she sews and does clothing repairs. At the same time she takes care of store customers. In the afternoon she tends to the store and on some days travels to a nearby city to buy merchandise and materials.

Leticia has asked Fundación Mujer for a loan to buy a sewing machine and raw materials to make clothes and merchandise (costume jewelry, purses, cosmetics and items for the home). She identifies the Christmas season as a time of possibly increasing sales. With help from the loan Leticia will be able to take advantage of increased demand during this season. In the future, Leticia dreams with moving her business to the center of the city where there are more customers that will allow for greater economic stability.

More information about this loan

In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.
