Elijah is a resident and a farmer in Litein, South Rift, Kenya. He is married with 5 children, all of school-going age. His farm currently produces tea, which he sells to Kenya Tea Development Authority, as well as milk and maize, which go to the local market.
Elijah has requested a loan of 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a chuff cutter at 50,000 KES and to construct a dairy unit at 30,000 KES. He says he expects improvement in his milk production due to better feeding and protection with the existence of the dairy unit. He adds the income will ensure a better livelihood for his entire family.
He says that the high cost of dairy feed takes up much of the farming costs, especially during dry seasons.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
