Eunice is a resident farmer in Kitale. She is aged 49 and has been in farming for 10 years, producing and selling eggs and vegetables to the local market. She is married with 5 children. The last three are still in school. She runs a retail business in the local market dealing with milk, eggs and vegetables sourced both from her farm and from other farmers locally.
Eunice has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo. The loan will help her to construct a dairy unit at 20,000 KES and a greenhouse at 40,000 KES. She hopes these two developments will expand her farming income and make her family financially stable.
She mentions the network of poor roads, high cost of farming inputs and lack of finance as the major challenges for farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
