Zacheaus is a resident of Nkubu and has been in farming for 10 years. He sells his produce -- milk, cabbage, carrots and potatoes -- to middlemen in the local market. He is married with four adult children and one minor who is still in school. Zacheaus operates a retail shop in the local market for additional income.
Zacheaus has requested a loan of 50,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a water tank for his farming business. He says the tank will ensure good storage for use by his dairy cows during dry seasons and will help maintain his milk production as well as other farming outputs. He adds that he plans to construct a greenhouse and that the tank will also ensure its water supply. He hopes his family living standards will be improved.
Zacheaus laments of pests and other crop and animal diseases that limit a farmer's output.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
