Ramiz is 50 years old, married, and has two children. For the past five years he has been selling construction materials. His wife helps him with the business. He is successful because his shop is located in the central bazaar. His monthly income from the business is 200 AZN. Now he is applying for a 1500 AZN loan to purchase more merchandise and increase his profits.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
