Augustine is a resident and a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya where he has been producing and selling maize for the local market. He is married with eight children, five of whom are still schooling. He is works as an electrician for additional income.
Augustine has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a motorcycle for a venture into the transport business. He says there is a current boom in the business and it will help him in improving his family's living standards. He says the transport business will supplement his farming income.
He says the unreliability of the rains and the high costs of farm inputs are the major challenges in farming .
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
