In the old fortress “Las Orquedeas” (The Orchids) in the city of Portoviejo, the 10 female and 1 male members of the Aries Communal Bank meet every 15 days. They dedicate themselves to diverse activities including general commerce and services among other things. They united in order to gain access to benefits offered by the Espoir Foundation. This is the first loan cycle for their communal bank and they hope to comply fully in order to continue forward with the institution.

Here we get to know Sulayka, who is 19 years old, single, and studying in her 3rd semester at the University of Manabi. She lives in her sister's house.

In her spare time, Suleyka sells Yanbal products (beauty articles, cosmetics, perfumes, and ladies accessories), to pay for her education and personal expenses. She also works in a national postal office from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. She makes her sales in the university where she studies during her free time. Sulayka sells on credit and collects weekly. She has done this for a year and it is going very well. Perfumes are her best sellers.

Sulayka will use this loan to buy perfumes, cosmetics, creams, and ladies jewelry. Her dream is to finish her studies and exercise her profession.

The 2 accompanying small photos are of a male and a female member who because of their work could not be present when the group photo was taken.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
