Gladys is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya and has been producing maize, milk and poultry birds for the local market. She lives with her family of three children in Kitale. She has been in farming for 15 years and owns low-cost rental houses in the local market to supplement her farming income.
Gladys has requested a loan of 85,000 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo. She will use 25,000 KES to purchase more poultry birds, and the rest to buy milk cans and a cooler to avoid the waste incurred when the milk goes bad, which has been a major challenge for her milk business. She hopes the loan will boost her income and help in educating the children.
She laments the high cost of managing animal diseases and low market prices for milk and other farm products.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
