Margaret is a resident and a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. She is 38 years old and has been in mixed farming for over eight years. Her produce of maize, milk, eggs and beans currently go to the local markets. She is married with six children between two and sixteen years old. She currently employs two farmhands.
Margaret has requested a loan for 41,600 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says the boost in dairy farming will help her retain business and improve her family's living standards significantly.
She is glad Juhudi Kilimo loans are enabling farmers buy better breeds of dairy cows. She notes, however, that food shortages and animal diseases are major challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
