María is a member of the 'Mujeres Rumbo al Progreso' community bank which is located in Puente Piedra district, in Lima, Peru. She has been selling beauty products for more than 14 years. She was motivated by a friend who sold these products. Her friend encouraged her to sell for the profits and rewards that can be obtained through this work. She also sells tamales on a weekend. She had this idea herself as she used to buy tamales for her own consumption and the place where they were sold was very far away. For this reason, she decided to prepare them herself and offer them to her neighbors, friends and family members. Her business is doing very well and she has a lot of orders. She is now delivering orders to companies that request her products in bulk.

María will use the loan that she obtained to fit out a space in her home where she would like to sell her tamales as well as beauty products. She would like to take advantage of the fact that her home is opposite a school with a lot of street traffic. María hopes to achieve her goals with a lot of work and sacrifice.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
