Charles has had 5 years in a farming business in his home area of Kitale, Western Kenya, where he also lives. He is 26 and single. His farm produces maize, beans and milk, which he sells to the local market.
Charles has requested a loan of 41,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow at 25,000 KES and poultry birds at 15,000 KES. He says he aspires to have at least five dairy cows and make his dairy farming more commercial. He had previously acquired a loan of a similar amount and says it has improved his family life.
He says shortage of animal feed is the main challenge, but he is glad to have access to Juhudi Kilimo loans.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
