Mary is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. She is 39 years old, and married, with 5 children between 6 and 15 years old. The first four children are already in school. Mary has been in farming for 5 years and currently employs one farmhand. Her produce of milk, beans and maize is sold to the local market.
Mary has requested a loan of 41,600 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says she will use the income to educate her children as well as boost her butchery business within the local market. She remains hopeful she will be able to add more dairy cows to her farm.
She appreciates Juhudi Kilimo loan services but points out that diseases remain a challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
