Benkan Group is made up of seven women living in the city of San. They are all married and, on average, are 42 years old and have four children. They buy and sell food condiments and various other articles. Eager to satisfy their ever increasing clientele, the group members decided to join the credit program of the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso. After having repaid four loans on schedule, the group is now in its fifth loan cycle.

Assan, standing at the right-hand side of the photo and wearing her child on her back, intends to use her loan to buy supplies from wholesalers in San. She will buy 20 boxes of Jumbo bouillon cubes, 2 sacks of cooking salt, 10 boxes of tomato purée, 50 kilograms of onions and 1 sack of garlic. She retails her goods out of her home, for cash or credit, to a clientele usually made up of women. Assan expects to make an average profit of 32,000 CFA francs per month, which she will use to pay off her loan and help her husband. The other women in the group expect to earn on average 29,500 CFA francs per month. The women of Benkan Group wish to become wholesalers in future.

Le groupe BENKAN est constitué de sept femmes de la ville SAN. Elles sont toutes mariées, ont en moyenne 42 ans et sont mères en moyenne de 4 enfants. Elles font l’achat vente de condiments alimentaires et divers articles.
Dans le souci de satisfaire le besoin de leurs clientèles qui ne cesse de croître les membres ont décidé d’intégrer le programme crédit de Soro Yiriwaso. Après quatre prêts tous correctement remboursés, ce groupe est son cinquième cycle.
ASSAN, debout à droite enfant au dos, compte utiliser son prêt pour s’approvisionner auprès des grossistes à SAN, en achetant, 20 paquets de Cube Jumbo, 2 sacs de sel de cuisine, 10 boites de concentrée de tomate, 50 kg d’oignon et 1 sac de l’ail. Elle effectue sa vente en détail, au comptant et à crédit, à domicile à une clientèle composée essentiellement de femmes.
Elle espère réaliser un bénéfice de 32.000 F CFA par mois, qui sera utilisé pour rembourser le prêt et venir en aide à son époux.
En ce qui concerne les autres femmes du groupe, elles comptent sur un bénéfice de 29500 francs FCFA par mois.
Les femmes du groupe BENKAN souhaitent devenir un jour des grossistes.
NB/ MAIMOUNA est absente pour raison du décès d’un parent.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
