Caren is a resident of the Kitale area of Western Kenya. She is a married mother of two, aged 6 and 3. She has been in mixed farming for five years, producing and selling vegetables and milk to the local market. She also runs a retail shop business for additional income.
Caren has made a loan request of 52,000 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says the purchase will improve her farming income and enable her to educate her children. She aspires to be a large-scale farmer.
She says occasional droughts is a challenge to farming in the area.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
