Noemi
The members of the “Crucita” communal bank meet in the city of Portoviejo’s Crucita Parish. This place is known for the beautiful beaches that surround this pretty place that are very popular with national and foreign tourists alike. It is known as “Crucita the Beautiful.”

We met Noemí, 48, here. She’s married and has five children. Four of them are already adults and independent. The youngest is 15 years old and in school and still living with her. A little granddaughter who has lived with her since birth and is like another daughter to her also lives with her. Her husband is a merchant.

She and her husband sell seafood. She tells us that he leaves at dawn to wait for the fishermen to arrive with their catches to buy the products and then transport them in his car to other cities and out to the countryside. They sell both at wholesale and at retail. They work four days a week from five to six hours daily or until they sell all the product they bought for that day’s sale.

This loan is to buy fish, shrimp, conchs, octopus and other varieties of seafood to take the best to their customers. She is a founding member of the communal bank and she likes it because interest rates are very low compared to other credit institutions.

Her dream is to own another car because the one they have is pretty worn down.
