The A.C. “Cordillera” (“Mountain Range” Communal Association) will start its sixth cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Los Andes Community Center. It is composed of eight members, guided by a directive board presided over by Rufina. The members of the Communal Association engage in different activities such as: running a grocery store, selling cloth, selling salchipapas*, selling construction materials, selling dressings, running a general store.

Rufina says she has been working with Pro Mujer for fifteen cycles, and that she became a member of the institution thanks to the invitation of a friend. She is a retailer, and she has been selling car accessories for some years.

The loan she is now requesting will be used to increase her working capital. She will buy car accessories from wholesale retailers, and she then sell them at fairs. This type of job allows her to earn money to support her family, as she is married and has a child.

When asked why she likes Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes its atmosphere.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
