Sadiye is 55 years old and married. She has four children. The youngest child is 23 and the oldest one is 35 years old.
"Before I started the trading business, I was a housewife. I raised four kids, but while I was struggling against financial problems, I could buy and sell a very little amount of goods. Later I decided to open my own shop. Taking the support of my husband and my oldest son, I opened my own shop. However, I have been through very hard times, and unfortunately I had to close my shop when I could not afford the rent. Back at home, I finished the remaining products by selling them to relatives, and I somehow managed to pay my debts."
"Just when I thought I was desperate, I discovered Maya. With the loans I borrowed from Maya, I bought new products from a wholesaler and I am back in business in my house. With the loans I borrowed from Maya, I can buy more products with a cheaper total price. My plans for the future are, if my affairs continue to go as fast and as well as they are going now, to open a shop--not in the city center but in a closer spot to my house--and to support my children and grandchildren as much as I can (by means of both financial and psychological support). My family is really important to me. I love my children and grandchildren so much."
This person’s distinctive characteristics: an ambitious and unyielding woman.

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya borrowers are part of lending groups, but are posted to Kiva as individuals. Therefore, lenders are exposed to additional risk of default in the event that a member of this borrower's group defaults on her loan. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.
