Benard, age 36, is a farmer in Litein, South Rift, Kenya, where he also carries out a taxi business. He has one farmhand. His farm produces milk which he sells to the local market. He has been in farming for 10 years.
Benard and his wife have three children, aged between five and 11 years old.
Benard has requested a loan in the amount of 52,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo in order to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He is confident that the acquisition of the cow will boost his income and enable him to ensure the education of his children. This is his first loan request with Juhudi Kilimo.
He sees three major challenges in farming: insufficient capital, poor weather conditions, and scarcity of animal feeds. He is grateful to Juhudi for the support accorded to farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
