Our client Kakule, leader of the «Maisha » group, is a young entrpreneur, 34 years of age, married and the mother of three young children, all of whom go to primary school. Her husband is a teacher. She is a partner in a pharmacy. She has her shop set up in a commercial building. She has been doing this work to earn a bit of extra income for 13 years already. She just completed eight loan cycles with Hekima. Her starting capital of $300 was received from her husband, when he used to work for an international organization. This new loan will allow her to renew her stock by buying five boxes of common generic mediations for resale. In addition, she would like her children to grow up in comfort and to expand her business. This client thanks Hekima for its work in support of impoverished women who do not have access to traditional banking.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
