Andrew is a father of seven children, all of whom are adults. He has been in farming for 20 years, employing one farmhand and producing bananas, milk, eggs, and coffee. He gets additional income from his general retail shop in the local market.
Andrew has requested a loan of 70,000 Kenya shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a water tank and irrigation pipes. He says the irrigation system will make his banana farming an all-season production and improve his living standards.
He laments high input costs for fertilizers and farmhands.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow.
