Maria Elena
María Elena is 25 years old and married. She lives with her husband and four year old son in the Guaranda canton in the Bolívar province. The members of the “Voluntad de Dios” (God’s Will) Communal bank can be found in the La Cría community in the Guanujo parish. It is 20 minutes from the Guaranda canton. The members of this bank devote themselves to farming and livestock.

María dedicates herself to farming and livestock. She has her own house and a plot of land. She grows potatoes, corn, wheat, beans, and peas. She also raises different animals like pigs, sheep, chicken, and guinea pigs. She buys and sells her products in the city of Guaranda.

She is requesting the loan to buy natural and chemical fertilizers, seeds, products for pest infestation, and supplies to plant potatoes and increase her business. The loan will be a support in supplying her financial needs and improving her farming activities.

She faces challenges like the rise and fall of prices of the products she sells and sudden climate changes like we are now experiencing.

Her dream is to be able to buy a plot of land and build a house. Then she will be able to live peacefully with her family.

She likes to sew, visit her family, and the carnival festivities as well as the ones in her area.

About Cooperativa San Jose

This loan is administered by Cooperativa San Jose, a 45,000-member credit union located high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador’s poorest province, Bolivar. They offer a unique loan called “Ventanillas Rurales” [Window to the Countryside], which uses a group guarantee but is an individual loan with a savings component, mostly to rural borrowers. Due to low savings rates and a history of macroeconomic instability, many traditional loans in Ecuador demand interest rates that are prohibitively high for some borrowers. There is also a high incidence of extortionist black-market lending in Ecuador. CSJ helps mitigate these problems by providing a less onerous and more appropriate option. Join CSJ’s Lending Team!
