Luciana is a widow who is 56 years old. She has three adult-aged children. The family is living in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. She has spent the last four years cultivating the land to make a living. Luciana prefers to plant and/or grow corn because it is the sort of thing she used to do when she was young. At the end of every month, she normally receives PHP 3,000, properly apportioned towards daily needs.
Luciana is a GDMPC member who joined in 2007. She was able to pay back all previous loans taken from the cooperative. Earlier this year, she requested a loan of PHP 5,000 to acquire fertilizers to boost production. Plants applied with adequate growing inputs lead to good productivity. Luciana is hopeful this will happen. She plans to buy tools needed to facilitate good productivity and expand her business area to gain more income for the family.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
