Otis
Otis is a true example of an entrepreneur, starting his first janitorial business when he was only 19. Otis has always dreamed of being his own boss and has never given up on that dream. Otis started O.J.’s Janitorial & Sweeping Service, LLC in 1994. Having experienced his share of ups and downs as a business owner, Otis was still not quite prepared for the devastation to his business that Hurricane Katrina caused. He lost over 30 of his service sites, and endured the theft of one of his company vehicles.

Steadfast in his endeavors as always, Otis is still moving forward and taking steps to reinvigorate his business. In 2009 Otis took a major step in obtaining his SBA (Small Business Administration) 8A certification to help ensure his ability to receive opportunities at government projects and subsequent contracts.

Otis will use his Kiva funds to take on his first federal government contract, as he continues to grow as a businessman and pave the way for others to follow.

About ASI Federal Credit Union

ASI Federal Credit Union has been experiencing an increased rate of defaults. This is possibly related to the experimental nature of the loan products the organization provides. In order to serve asset-poor communities in New Orleans -- including many still recovering from Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill -- ASI offers loan products designed to help people start and grow businesses even if they don't have extensive collateral, credit histories, or business experience. For these reasons, these loans also carry a higher level of risk than typical loans on Kiva.
