Paul, aged 33, is a father of two aged eight and six and has been in farming in his hometown of Litein for four years with the help of one farmhand. His farm produces milk, potatoes, and maize. Apart from selling his own milk, Paul sources more from other farmers which he retails to customers within the local market.
Paul has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhiudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He says that the income will help him pay for his children's education. He is optimistic that his farm will grow owing to the experience he has so far.
Paul says infrastructure remains the biggest challenge followed by price fluctuations.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
