Melisa has been in active farming for 4 years producing and selling milk and eggs which she sells to the local markets in her hometown of Eldoret in North Rift, Kenya. She is married with one child, aged 9. She runs a retail shop for household goods and cereals.
She has made a loan request amounting to 90,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to enable her construct a dairy unit and start a poultry farm by buying poultry birds. She says the two businesses will help her in paying for the education of her child and payment of the loan. She is optimistic that with time she will be able to make supplies of over 10 trays of eggs in a day.
Melisa laments the high costs for management of animal diseases.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
