Maria is 72 years old and married with five children, all of whom are professionals and have moved out of the house. She is the owner of a small restaurant that sells typical Peruvian food such as "arroz con pollo", "lomo saltado", and "sopas". She is asking for a loan in order to expand her kitchen and purchase another oven. She plans to buy cement and other construction materials to expand her kitchen. She has had her restaurant for 16 years and has been very successful. She is committed to making all of the necessary loan payments on time.

Asociación Arariwa is a large non-governmental organization that started offering microcredit in 1994 to improve the quality of life, skills and equity of the population in the rural Cusco region of Peru. Arariwa serves the southern Andean provinces of Peru, and is distinguished by its efforts to reach the very poor, who often live in isolated rural areas. Arariwa fosters village banking, supports savings accounts, promotes access to education, and empowers women entrepreneurs (who make up 78% of its borrowers).
