Michael is 61 years old and has been farming in Litein,South Rift, Kenya, for the past 31 years. He is married with nine children, all of whom are adults except the last born. His farm produces milk, which he sells to the local Kokiche Cooling plant. He is also a retired teacher and earns a pension, which supplements his farming income.
He has requested a loan of 52,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He says the additional cow will boost his family's income and make life more bearable.
Michael says, however, that the small parcels of land owned by farmers is the main undoing in farming as it limits their capacity to produce.
