Selina has been farming in Litien in the Rift Valley of Kenya for 15 years. Her farm produces tea, maize, vegetables and milk, which are all sold locally. She also owns and manages a beauty salon (pictured in the photo). Selina is 41 years old and a widowed mother of 3 children who all attend school.
Selina has made a loan request of 90,000 KES in order to purchase a dairy cow. With this loan, she says that she will be able to acquire a quality cow that will produce enough milk for domestic consumption and sale. The proceeds from this loan will help Selina pay her children's school fees.
Selina faces the challenge of diseases which affect her production. In 5 years' time, she wants to have increased the number of her dairy cows to 4 and to have purchased a van for transporting her farm produce to the market.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
