Las Mariposas Group's story
Despite her youth, Brenda has demonstrated that responsibility and effort can change the future. She is nineteen years old, married to a day labourer and mother of two children aged four months and three years. Brenda has a sixth grade education, however she had to abandon her studies because of financial constraints in her family. However, this did not prevent her from embarking on generating income of her own.
She has been growing Cardamom for four years on her own land, supported by her husband and three labourers. In addition she complements her income by rearing free range chickens and pigs that she sells in the local market and occasionally from her home. Brenda is applying for her second Kiva loan to buy more chickens, pigs, manure and fertilizer with the goal of improving her production. Her objective is to continue to develop both businesses and provide better opportunities for her family.
The ten women that form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank called "Las Mariposas" speak the Q’eqchi language and a little Spanish. They live in Quiché Department/State. These women make a living make a living growing Cardamom and rearing domestic animals. During their monthly meetings, they learn about a variety of topics including: business, health and family. Savings is one of the topics that they highlight. This is part of the "Microcrédito Plus" programme.
