A loan of $100,000 helps hilltribe Organics support 300 farmers in Thailand and Singapore to expand their poultry farms and strengthen their livelihoods.
Hilltribe Organics Limited's story
Hilltribe Organics (HTO) is a social enterprise founded in 2013 with the aim of increasing the income of hill tribe farmers in Northern Thailand by contracting them to set up and run organic, free-range chicken farms for egg production. HTO provides the necessary inputs (such as hens and organic feed), guarantees to buy all the eggs produced at a fixed and transparent price, and handles the supply chain and all sales and marketing, eliminating middle men who take much of the value in the agriculture value chain.
Pictured in the photo is Miyoe a member of the Akha tribe living in Wawee village in the hills of northern Thailand. Miyoe has been able to expand her poultry farm and recently received a second Kiva loan to purchase 700 hens. A loan to Hilltribe Organics enables them to work with farmers like Miyoe.
Hilltribe Organics was named The Most Sustainable Farming Model in Thailand in 2022 by the Thailand Department of Livestock Development and won the 2022 global Sustainable Food Farming Award from UKNGO Compassion in World Farming.
