Trabajadoras Por Fe Group

Trabajadoras Por Fe Group's story

Genara, 59 years old, continues to work tirelessly at her tortilla shop to support her family. Genara is married to a mason and has six children, all over the age of twenty-five. Her children completed the ninth grade; some are graduates with degrees in accounting or general high school diplomas, but they do not currently practice their professions. Four of them are already married, and she is a grandmother to nine children. Genara only completed the second grade; she stopped attending school because her mother became a widow, and she had to care for her eleven siblings.

For the past forty years, she has managed her tortilla shop during the mornings and afternoons at the local market, providing employment for four people. Additionally, for the last nine years, she has prepared and sold tamales on Saturdays. She is requesting her sixth Kiva loan to purchase corn, cooking gas, pots, pans, and rice for making tamales. Her goal is to keep her business stable and continue to be the primary provider for her family.

There are seven Spanish-speaking women, originally from the department/state of Huehuetenango, who belong to the Friendship Bridge Community Bank group known as "Trabajadoras por fe". They earn their living by making tostadas, selling cooking gas, selling tamales, running a tortilla shop, and raising domestic animals. They feel fortunate to participate in the "Microcrédito Plus" program, which offers loans, monthly educational training (covering health, family, women's issues, and business), and bimonthly health services (medical consultations, screenings, and family planning).

Genara deeply values her Kiva lenders. Thank you!
