Las Flores Cinco Arrollos Group's story
Brendy is thirty-four years old, in a committed relationship, and has four children from five to nineteen years old. Currently, only one of them is still in school, in fifth grade, while the older ones finished up to sixth grade. Brendy did not have the opportunity to go to school as her parents were unable to support her in her education. However, she did not fall behind. For fifteen yeas, she has worked raising creole chickens and ducks, which she sells from her house. In addition, six years ago she began reselling vegetables, an activity she does both at her house and as a street vendor. She has the constant support of her partner, who works as a mason, and of her children, who help with the family business.
Brendy asks for her second Kiva loan to purchase more vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, chayote and güicoy squash wholesale. With this investment, she seeks to expand her offerings, increase her sales, and grow her business to improve her family's financial stability.
Seven Spanish-speaking women who live in the department/state of Huehuetenango have joined together to form Friendship Bridge's communal bank Las Flores Cinco Arrollos. The women work selling fruits, vegetables, raising domestic animals, and at a bakery. They are grateful for the monthly educational training they receive, part of the Microcrédito Plus program. Topics such as health, hygiene, and finances immediately resonate in their lives.
They are grateful to the Kiva lenders.
