Flor De Jazmin 5 Group's story

Sara, age 30, is an example of resilience.  She and her husband have three children.

Since the age of 16, Sara has been engaged in farm work, mainly helping her family with harvesting coffee and cardamom.  Despite only finishing school through the second grade, her love of the land has been her education.

Through a friend, Sara joined ACMUV and began obtaining loans.  Her first loan was used to buy coffee seedlings and her second loan was used to maintain her coffee crops.  She will now use this loan to acquire more coffee plants.

Sara values the trust of ACMUV and the loans have given her opportunities to make progress.  She is the group leader of "Flor de Jazmin 5", which consists of three Maya Ixil women.  Their business consists of 34% textiles and 66% agriculture.  The average age is 33.  The group averages three children per family.  With regard to their education, 67% are illiterate and 33% were unable to finish primary school.
